Flat Doesn't Mean Monotone I've noticed a disturbing trend in designs lately. With everything going to a 'flat' design look, it seems designers think that this means they also have to make everything as monotone and as bland as possible. STOP IT! All you're doing is making your apps more difficult to use. You are sacrificing usability for a 'clean' look, and it's not worth it. My example here is with Desk.com (Sorry guys!). I'm a huge fan of Desk and have been using them for years in different capacities. When they released a preview of their new Agent Interface I was very excited... until I saw it. I really hope that they do some additional design changes to this before releasing it to the general public (It's currently in beta). Here is the current iteration of the Desk.com interface. With a quick glance you are not only able to see which cases are open,...
Visitors Don't Want to Click, Scroll and Tap. It doesn't matter your opinion on the subject. Anytime a user has to do an extra click, scroll or zoom on your website to obtain the information they came for, it is a bad User Experience. You think it's OK because it just takes a second, or because you can do it just fine? Re-read my first statement. Users are not coming to your website to tap and scroll. They come to get, or provide, information. So LET THEM! Stop getting in their way, cramming your website with needless sidebars, extra navigation, filler content and most importantly non-responsive design. People are always telling me things like 'Well it's just one extra click' or 'It's easy to scroll' like this will be the ONLY website a user visits in a day and that a hundred extra clicks or scrolls per day doesn't translate into seriously wasted time and energy. Start with a...

The 4K Mobile Myth I am really starting to get tired of all this 4K hype, and even more tired of people demanding 4K phones and tablets like it would accomplish anything more than draining the battery like a Nachzehrer sucking a soul slurpee. Every time I read/hear about somebody saying that 4K is the next big thing in tablets and mobile, or that the new 4K tablets are going to be so gorgeous and high resolution... well, I'm all like:   For serious. Anybody who actually believes that a 4K tablet will benefit them in any way does not understand the basics of display technology and have been boondoggled by the industry (Along with thousands of others). 4K resolution is great for large displays, and by large, I mean 50" and bigger. Even at 50" you're still not going to get the full effect of 4K. I've heard people say how clear it is with...

Reality Becomes Reality Back in December I wrote The New Art of Deception: Reality, which charged that the use of realistic 3D photos or video would be used in nefarious ways in the wild. I was right, but the use is not so nefarious. In fact, it's a damn good idea that should be used worldwide. Meet Sweetie, the 10-year old girl from the Philippines who performs sexual acts over webcam for perverts worldwide. But she doesn't really exist. Researchers from Terre des Hommes Netherlands sought a way to open the worlds eyes to online child sex tourism and they did so through Sweetie. Within 1 month, four researchers were able to locate 1000 predators and turn over their information to Interpol. The point has been made, online child sex tourism is here and we can help stop it. Please check out the dedicated information page for Sweetie and help spread the word about this...
You're a Professional? Your Email Says Otherwise When you're in business, regardless of what area of business you are in, presenting yourself as a professional is key. People don't want to give their hard earned money to any crackerjack with a business card. If you want people to take you seriously as a business then you need to stop plastering your business cards and advertisements with Hotmail or Gmail (Or any other free email provider) addresses.  I see this all the time. Way too often in fact, and in really makes me shake my head. If you have a website (If you don't... that's another post), there is no reason not to have an email address that matches your domain. But don't worry, I'm here to save you from this embarrassment. I'm here to tell you that you can have your cake and eat it too. You can keep your Hotmail or Gmail account AND have a professional looking...
